Getting a ‘Manager’s Check’

image by Jeff Belmonte via Flickr

When my mom said ‘You’re on your own’ when enrolling period began, she wasn’t kidding: she didn’t really lift a finger to help me out in any way. To cut the long story short, all summer long I had to remind myself of all the important dates, all the procedures, negotiations and transactions needed to finally move on from High School and into College.

One of the many things I needed to do was to pay my tuition. I’ve gone over several options (including e-banking, phone banking and even withdrawing every bit of money I had in my bank account to pay it all in cash) but everyone else in the family suggested I pay using a ‘Manager’s Check’. Simply put, a Manager’s Check is a Check issued by the bank. It’s either they get the money from your Debit Account or you pay it in full right then and there. And in addition, it’s as good as cash.

I chose the former and went to the bank early. Excited? Not so much. I just needed more time with my computer back at home. After going through the long and tiring process, here’s what I can teach you guys when you’re going to the bank (alone) to get a Manager’s Check:

1. Bring your statement of account/tuition assessment with you

Unless you want to memorize how much you’re going to pay, down to the centavo, I suggest you bring it with you. It’ll be easy to check later on.

2. Know your account number

When you chose the option ‘Debit from account’ (just like me), you’d have to know your Account Number because you’ll have to write it down. Bringing your Debit Card or Passbook with you can help you with this.

3. Bring your Passbook… if you have

When I got my savings account in BDO, my mom got me a Passbook so I could ‘monitor’ where my money went – yes, you can write on it, so don’t be afraid. During the transaction, the bank teller relied heavily on my Passbook: she had it from start to finish. So if you have one and that’s where you’re getting your money, bring it.

4. Remember how to write numbers – in WORDS

This. Oh my, I TOTALLY forgot how to do this, so I ended up sitting and staring at the form I was supposed to fill out for a long, long time. Remember how to do this before-hand to save yourself from the embarrassment and, of course, time.

5. Double check everything – twice (or even thrice)

It won’t hurt if you check things again and again until you’re completely satisfied. Remember, you’re dealing with money – you can’t be too sure. Check the number, the person (or institution) you’re going to give the Check to, the amount – absolutely everything! Do this twice at least before you hand in the form.

6. Relax – There’s no need to panic!

As long as you’re alert, and you know what you’re doing, then nothing can go wrong. If you have questions or if a problem arises, you can always talk to the bank teller and he/she’ll help you. Trust me on that, they really know what they’re doing.

I don’t know with you guys, but being able to do these kinds of things actually make me feel a bit happier – Less dependant and more outgoing, in a way.

‘I Love you, Ma’

Image by Edwin Dalorzo via Flickr

Before we all get eaten alive with campaigning, with the elections, the gossip, the news, the internet, and everything else that we deem important in our lives, let’s not forget that May 9 is also on the calendar – yes, Mother’s day.

As teenagers, we’ve already developed a sense of ‘parent immunity’ – meaning, we’ve become accustomed to their prattle about ‘sleeping earlier’ and ‘stay in the house for once’. We’ve also become significantly cold, and don’t start denying it: when have YOU kissed/hugged/told your parents the words ‘I love you’? (Guys, that phrase isn’t just reserved for your girlfriend/boyfriend – remember that ._.)

So maybe we sometimes do, but we do those half-heartedly. That hurts more than you think it does, but your mothers understand… maybe.

So do yourself a favor and trek to the mall (secretly!) to find your mom the perfect gift that you think she’ll like – don’t just grab anything off the shelf and say ‘this could do’. Or if you’re more into cooking, start thinking of a menu and buy the groceries you need as early as today. And if you don’t have money, a heartfelt, hand-made letter is always a good thing – just make sure it really did come from the heart and not from someone else’s.

Mother’s day only happens once a year – think of it as Christmas, and if you haven’t said you loved your mothers, then it’s high time you do.

Taking the Big Leap

Oh you know what I’m talking about.

You’ve been madly in love with this certain person for how many months. 3? 8? Maybe a year even? And yet, you’re still there, just another spectator of his/her brilliance–always hiding in the shadows because your heart can’t take the nervous beating.

Get a grip.

I DO know the feeling, don’t get me wrong; and I would admit that it is definitely one of the best things you could ever feel. Unrequited as it may seem, loving someone secretly is like a thrilling little experience that you’d want to do over and over again. Everyday–even at any given hour.

You feel like goo when he/she passes and you’d want yourself to look really cool and awesome once that happens. Because in your eyes, your crush looks like the most perfect thing God has ever created. His/her voice sounds like your current LSS song that you’ll never get tired of hearing and to add more to the ‘I can’t stop thinking of you’ stance, let’s add that he/she just has to have the most adorable smile that has ever graced the planet.

Teen Support: Befriending a friend

A problem has been bugging Mr Kevin Paquet for a couple of days already, or should I say weeks? It started all with a little prank, that turned out to be the cause of a mind-bugging, emotional torment on his side.

Mr Almighty, has caused all this, or should I say he?

Exactly three Saturdays ago (including yesterday’s), Kevin attended a practice with his group mates for their English Musical Excerpt. But instead of practicing for the upcoming year level competition this Wednesday, he messed up, literally.

“Whilst the other boys were busy with ‘something’ upstairs”, he says, “I had something else in mind, to shot a glass or two”. With all his money on the line and lending a few bucks from his school friend Maribel, Kevin decided to buy a Gilbeys Gin, which all of his fellas could enjoy from. His other classmate, Imee prepared the drink. Mixing it up with Grape Juice and has tasted pretty odd, according to him and his friends.

Now, after he took more than 5 cups of the said liquid, he wasn’t really “he”. As he appeared to be drunk and wasn’t the only one in that status, his other friend felt the same way too. The whole group went to a nearby Internet Cafe, and it was there where the whole mess started.

Kevin had this special friend of his, going by the name Leslie. The girl that is causing all the headache for him right now. But everything goes totally to his account. On that day, Leslie was present and accompanied him as he opens the door to Mr Almighty, the guy who is said to be able to answer anything and everything. He answered a few questions to keep the mood cool, yet eventually went too far with some of his questions until it reached the point that Leslie felt offended. And doesn’t wants to talk to him until this very minute we are writing down this post.

The problem now is, that he doesn’t know what he should do, how he should approach that girl. He did not felt this way for a long time. She used to be a good friend of him, but now it turns out that he is starting to feel something for her, which is quite unexplainable. By any wrong move that he could take from now on, it may cost their friendship, and maybe more.

He needs your help, your advice on what he should do with that girl to let her loose the anger and befriend him once again.

Teen Support Episode 1: Studying Won’t Help Anything

I’m very proud to inform you that we’ve got our first email sender for the Teen Support. And as request, I shall not publicize any personal information about the writer enclosed in the email she sent. Be reminded that the published article may contain edits from the original one, as we are trying to translate everything into English.

Dear Pinoy Teens,

Hello, I’m Nikka Domingo from the Philippines. One of the frequent readers of your website. I’ve made use of the couple of lessons that you’ve posted here from time to time, and I feel happy about the way you try to help us fellow teenagers to excel in class. As for I have a little advantage over the other readers, being a 4th year student just like you.

Speaking of excelling in class, it appears to make no sense at all, as if it is useless. I don’t know what is wrong! We’ve had our first monthly examination good a week ago, and I almost failed in all subjects that I’ve studied well. Maybe telling you more about the way I study could help.

I study by having music turned on, and talking to my friends via sms with my mobile phone, either to discuss any random gossips or to oftentimes inquire about something that I find difficult to understand on what I was studying about. It does help for me, I think. Yet, the result of the examination totally upset me and make me feel like a looser, I’ve lost the confidence to ever touch a book again and study because it just does not make any sense at all.

I hope that you could recommend me some tips and hopefully leave me a couple of advices that I could follow in order for me to pass this very 4th year in secondary education. Please do help me out in spite the very few details that are contained in this email. Thanks once again!

From Princess:

Dear Nikka (we changed the name to just a random name),

First of all, we, especially I really do appreciate that you’ve left us an email regarding your problem. Now, let’s get on with the business. Hmm. I know how you feel, I’ve felt that frustration before, as if all that I’ve studied appeared useless at the end, and a lot of hours of lurking around the pages of your notebook or your notes appear seemingly nonsense. But, it does happen often, you, nor I are excluded from that. Nor are other people excluded.

Maybe your mind just blacked out for a while, for that very moment, but like you’ve said, failing in almost all examinations? Must be something fishy with that. Ask these question to yourself and check what’s wrong could possibly be the cause for your land slide failure.

  • What did you study? All the lessons or just a portion of them?
    • It is very important to (most of the time) take up every single line of your notes that you either get from your notebook or from your book. These are the fundamentals of every examination created by the teacher.
  • When did you study them?
    • The time frame between your pre-study for the examination and the examination itself is very important. We all good know that stress is really not a good friend; and stress comes along your way if ever you are studying on the last minute. You won’t be able to absorb anything from your lessons, else if you do; it’ll only be for a short span of time and you might come to forget all that once the examination starts.
  • How did you study, where and with whom?
    • Besides the time frame for your studies, you also need to take care of your surroundings during your study session. It’s very important that there’s nothing that may destruct you while you are studying. It’s advisable that you refrain from texting or talking to your friends about anything not related to what you are studying. It’s also recommended that you turn of any device that’s producing annoying sounds that could disturb you, like the Radio for example. Yet, there are really a few people who come to perform better when music is played. If in case you are one of those people, feel free to apply your favorite music along with your study, but just make sure that you’ll be a passive listener at that very moment.

If any of our readers can add some advices, please do so by just leaving a comment below
